Bangladesh Elections 2007

Will they happen? And if so, will they be fair?

Posted by Nirbachon on July 11, 2006

The Government may table a Bill on the 15th amendment to the Constitution in the House today, a senior Minister told The New Nation yesterday.

The proposed amendment will bar holding of by-election to a parliamentary constituency if it becomes vacant within the last 180 days of the tenure of Parliament.

Members of the main opposition Awami League (AL) yesterday walked out twice from the House in protest against the hurried approval of the proposed amendment to the Constitution by the Cabinet and switcthing off of microphones of the opposition members by the Speaker, when they were speaking against the move.

The Constitution now provides for the holding of by-polls within 90 days of the vacancy of a seat.
