DHAKA: The Election Commission of Bangladesh, scheduled to begin updating of electoral rolls from Friday, has been refused money by the government, the media reported, speculating that the task, delayed earlier due to the poll body’s reluctance to carry it out, may be again derailed.

Finance Minister Saifur Rahman, according to media reports, has declined to allocate funds till he gets an account of how the funds allocated earlier have been spent.

EC to ‘display’ updated voter list, but says it won’t publish draft

Posted by Nirbachon on July 12, 2006

The Election Commission (EC) yesterday decided to make the updated voter list, prepared through door to door visits, open to the public for inspection before publishing the final list. The move is an obvious compromise between the popular demand for publishing a draft voter list and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) MA Aziz’s staunch resistance to publication of a draft list. The latest back-pedalling by the EC on its previous statement is also evidently in line with its usual practice of creeping out of its intransigence after much controversy.

Zia names poll panel secretary

Posted by Nirbachon on July 7, 2006

Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has given the Election Commission a new secretary to end the controversy over the role of the organisation’s head and prepare for smooth parliamentary elections.

This appears to be her response, without being seen as tampering with the constitutional body, in the face of the opposition demand for the removal of the present Chief Election Commissioner, Justice M.A. Aziz.
