50,000 march in electoral protest

MORE than 50,000 activists marched in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on the sixth and final day of protests to press for electoral reforms ahead of January polls.

Chanting slogans such as “No reforms, no polls” and “Accept reforms before it is too late”, the protesters representing a 14-party opposition alliance began the march from Gabtali, some 20km west of central Dhaka. More than 50,000 joined the peaceful march, said a senior Dhaka police officer.

AL against Ershad joining four-party

Key leaders of the Awami League and its alliance partners are trying to convince former President HM Ershad not to join the BNP-led ruling four-party alliance through some influential leaders of his faction of the Jatiya Party.

Insiders said some senior leaders of the Awami League-led alliance yesterday sent a message to Ershad through different channels, including his younger brother and party leader GM Quader, MP, and Jatiya Party (JP) Presidium member Dr TIM Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury, saying his joining the ruling alliance would be counter-productive since the government became totally isolated from the people.

Saifur-CEC discord a part of same blueprint: Abdul Jalil MP

Awami League General Secretary Abdul Jalil MP yesterday alleged that the ruling alliance is hatching conspiracy to hold the next general election as per a blueprint to cling to power.The discord between Finance Minister Saifur Rahman and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice Abdul Aziz is a planned drama, being staged as part of the blueprint to mislead people and political parties, he said while addressing a memorial meeting for Awami League leader Abdul Momin, held at at Mohongonj Government Pilot High School playground in Mohongonj.

Awami League (AL)-led 14-party opposition combine last night announced a six-day road march from July 25 to press home its demand for reforms in the caretaker government system and the Election Commission (EC).AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil announced the fresh action programme after a meeting of the opposition lineup with AL presidium member Abdur Razzak in the chair.

Opposition Awami League (AL) will not take any decision instantly over the proposal made by Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury.
“We are not thinking about it now”, AL General Secretary and 14-party opposition combine Coordinator Abdul Jalil told the BDNEWS when asked if his camp would forge any unity with the Bikalpa Dhara ahead of the next general election or for the ongoing movement.

Dr Kamal hopeful of forming grand alliance against 4-party

Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday said the process of grand national consensus among Awami League (AL)-led 14-party coalition, Gono Forum, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) and Bangladesh Tarikat Federation is underway as they will work together to defeat the BNP-Jamaat alliance in the next general elections.

“It is a good news for the nation that all progressive and pro-liberation forces are being united on the basis of the 14-party’s 23-point proposal. Now we are working to form a grand national consensus for safeguarding the democracy, people and nation from the grip of BNP-Jamaat-led four-party alliance government,” the Gono Forum President said at a meeting of party representatives at Engineers Institution in the capital.

B Chy sets conditions to join AL-led 14-party alliance

Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury has set a six-point condition to join the Awami League (AL)-led 14-party combine, reports UNB.

Addressing a representative meeting of the Ganoforum in the city Thursday, he announced his party would join the 14-party combine if it pledges in writing to agree on the six conditions that include punishment of corrupt persons and criminals within two years if elected to power.

200 Injured, 100 arrested: Clashes mark EC siege programme

Election only after reforms of EC, caretaker system: Jalil

Awami League general secretary Abdul Jalil yesterday (Friday) renewed their demand for reforms of the caretaker government system and the Election Commission, and warned that any attempt to hold the next elections without reforms would be disastrous.

Jalil, also convenor of the 14-party opposition combine, said people would not allow any election without electoral reforms no matter what conspiracy the BNP-Jamaat coalition government is hatching to rig the next polls.
