Politics spoils an economic opportunity

When the Tata Group, an Indian corporate giant, came to Bangladesh in 2004 with its large investment proposal, there was euphoria all over. But after about two years of wrangling and foot-dragging, a team of Tata officials announced last Monday their decision to suspend further negotiations on the investment proposal that was scaled up to $3.0 billion-plus from the initial $2.0 billion.

Tata suspends US 3bn investment plan in Bangladesh

India’s industrial giant Tata Group Monday announced the suspension of its 3 billion U.S. dollars investment plan in Bangladesh until the country’s general elections next year, private news agency UNB reported.

Bangladesh to delay decision on Tata FDI

Bangladesh is delaying a decision on whether to accept a $3 billion investment proposal from India’s Tata Group by at least six months until a new government is formed after January elections, a top official said. Tata, which has proposed building steel, fertilizer, power and coal units in Bangladesh, had requested a decision by the end of June.
